The Gisborne Fire Brigade had three backward engines in its station last month....but they were not backward when it came to racing to the scene of a fire. The engines were turned around when Palmerston Road was being dug up for the laying of sewer pipes, and they were forced to use the back entrance.

Cook County Council road-making machinery at work on Centennial Marine Parade, past the abattoirs, where they are developing the old "sand track" into a scenic drive around the bay. The new road will ultimately connect up with the Willows Road at the Waipaoa River.

The Midway Surf Life-saving Club's proposed new clubhouse, cabaret rooms, shop, and public changing facilities, which is to be built on the beach frontage adjacent to the Churchill Park Motor Camp. A much-needed facility at this end of Waikanae Beach, the clubhouse should be built in the very near future. The building was designed by Courtland Design Services, of Gisborne.
