Opotiki Flood Disaster

These aerial pictures show better than anything else so far published the disastrous extent of the recent flood at Opotiki, when the town suffered its worst flood yet. They were taken about six hours before the waters reached their peak, at which time they were five feet deep in the main street. The flood was 15 inches higher than any previously recorded.

The business heart of the town, with stranded cars abandoned in the middle of the streets. Fast-flowing water can be seen sweeping along a street in the upper left of the picture, to rejoin the river at the extreme right. (Pictures reprinted from "Tauranga Photo News").
