Fast Swim By Vivien Haddon

New Zealand's Empire Games medallist, Vivien Haddon, unofficially broke her national 220 yards breaststroke record when she competed in an invitation carnival at the Macrae Baths recently.

The young Manawatu swimmer returned a time of 2min 53.9sec for the distance, this being .9sec outside the N.Z. selectors' Olympic qualifying time and 2.4sec faster than her existing short course record. As this was recorded in a handicap event, the times could not be claimed as official.

Swimming against Miss Haddon were top local breaststrokers Ian Watt, Vivienne Scott, Robert Powell and Greg Meade, who all crossed the finish tape within seconds of each other for a very exciting finish. The official placings were: 1st, Greg Meade; 2nd, Ian Watt; 3rd, Vivien Haddon.
