Top Woman Golfer At Awapuni

The top American woman golfer. Miss Marilynn Smith, thrilled a gallery of 250 at the Awapuni golf links when she returned a round of 69 during an exhibition match last month.

This score, which she achieved from the men's tees, was only two short of the course record held by professional Eddie Fennell.

Playing in perfect conditions, Miss Smith proved her ability with powerful tee shots and accurate chips and putts.

Partnering Miss Smith was Gisborne amateur Eric Gordon. They were opposed by Heather Booth, a promising 19-year-old Gisborne golfer, and Napier professional Ernie Southerden.

After the match, Miss Smith commented that the greens were the finest she had played on in New Zealand.
