Tuna Fishing With the Olwyn

Tuna fishing, which is still in its infancy with New Zealand fishermen, has been undertaken with moderate success by several Gisborne fishing boats this season.

Fishing for J. Wattie Canneries Ltd., the local fishermen have worked the East Coast-Bay of Plenty waters, using poles, and more recently, Japanese gill-nets and long-lines.

The tuna vessel Olwyn, owned by Watties, has recently been employed by the Government for an experimental survey of New Zealand waters. It has tried Japanese long-lines and nets, but to date, its best catch has been with poles, taking two-and-a-half tons of fish in two hours.

The pictures on these pages were taken on board the Olwyn by Lloyd Cornish.
