"Mad" Motorcyclons

An entertainment feature at the Junior Stampede and Country Sports Day, at the showgrounds, was a trick motorcycling act from Auckland billed as "Gene Mace and the Motocyclons".

The act consisted of riding motorcycles through blazing hoops, walls, houses, and tunnels, leaping over ramps, and generally providing the crowd with plenty of thrills.

Climax of the performance was leader Mace's epic stunt. Stripped to the waist, he rode his 'bike through a sheet of plate glass. One of the thousands of flying glass splinters pierced an artery in his arm, necessitating immediate medical attention and a rushed visit to the hospital. He also received more than a dozen minor cuts over the rest of his body.

Later in the day, he was back at the showgrounds performing the same act for the afternoon crowds.
