The Manawatu Game

In a lively game in which Poverty Bay made an encouraging comeback after being down 13 points at half time, the touring Manawatu Rugby team defeated P.B. by 21 points to 11 before a good crowd at Rugby Park.

Played in ideal conditions, the match held special interest for two of the players on the field. For captain Alan Rowlands, it was his 100th first-class game, and he accounted for himself well by scoring the Bay's opening try; and for Manawatu winger, Basil Shanks, who hails from Waingake and played for the Gisborne Boys' High first 15 two years ago, it was something of a reunion to be playing on Rugby Park again.
