"Club Sandwich" in Concrete

An intriguing form of entertainment will come the way of Gisborne residents early next year when four 120-ton concrete floors of the new Government Life building on the corner of Gladstone Road and Grey Street are lifted into their positions.......looking like nothing so much as a club sandwich in concrete.

The floors will be lifted in halves, each 70 x 42 feet in size, on a total of 14 concrete columns. The job will be the third "lift-slab" one in New Zealand and is much larger than that accomplished recently on the seven-storey Tasman Hotel in New Plymouth, pictured below.

This picture shows reinforcing for one of the floors, a completed section in the background, end some of the columns of the five-storey building.

There's a lot of concrete to be poured!
