Cubs and Guides

These boys of the Wesley Troop of cubs were discovered by "Photo Neva" during Easter, engaged in a tracking exercise on Waikanae Beach. At rear are the three assistant cub-masters in charge, Misses Betty Bell, Shirley O'Connor and Ada England.

Misses. J. Michie (top) and M. English, Gisborne cubmasters, were among 27 candidates who attended the Wood Badge course for cubmasters held in the Manawatu during Easter. They both passed their Part II (practical) examination for the Wood Badge.

At an age averaging more than a year under usual these five members of the Turanganui Girl Guide Company have gained their 1st Class Badges after a course for which Mrs Nicoll, the company commander, was instructor. Badges were presented by Mrs J. C. O. Hill, District Commissioner. Girls are from left: Barbara Bean, Diane Carnie, Shirley Johnson, Janette Robb, and Jean Todd.

This beautiful wayside crucifix is to be seen outside Holy Trinity Church at the corner of Derby Street and Palmerston Road. It was raised on November 11, 1920, through the efforts of the Holy Trinity Girls' Club, in memory of the fallen of World War I. The figures of the Christ and the Pieta are in bronze, the work of an English sculptor. The cross is of Sydney sandstone. It was erected during the ministry of the late Canon H. Packe.

The new £10,000 egg floor in Bright Street, built to cope with the increasing business of Farm Products Co-operative Limited, was opened recently. In this picture Mrs M. Peel, a director, is seen "cracking the first egg" at the opening ceremony. Seated at the table, right to left, are Mr G. W. Armstrong (manager), Mr E. H. Baker (chairman of directors), Mr T. A. Bolton (director, and also chairman of Gisborne Co-op. Poultry Producers Ltd.), and Mr O. F. A. Poole (secretary).

The swing bridge across the Taraheru at Lytton Road, where a new bridge is to be erected shortly. At a recent meeting, the Borough Council decided to call tenders for the bridge, which will greatly facilitate communication between the western suburbs of the borough.
