At St. Andrews Church, Hastings, Florence Ward, daughter of Mrs E. Ward, Hastings, was married recently to Julie Benson, son of Mr and Mrs C. Benson, Gisborne, and one of the local speedway stars.

The engagement has been announced of Ngaire Margaret Howe, second daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Howe, Clifford Street, Gisborne, to Barry Thomas Stephens, eldest son of Mr and Mrs E. Stephens, Te Pohue, Hawkes Bay.

Mr and Mrs Jack. Faras and their son, John, photographed outside the home of Mrs Faras parents, Mr and Mrs W. H. Scott, Clifford Street. Formerly Miss Bobbie Scott, who Trill be widely remembered as a teacher of ballet in Gisborne, and a national adjudicator in ballet, Mrs Faras is now a resident of Broken Hill, N.S.W., where her husband is mine host at the Royal Exchange Hotel. Mrs Faras maintains her interest in ballet by conducting a school in Broken Hill. She and her husband spent a month in New Zealand on a tour of scenic spots.

Rapid progress is being made with the construction of the commodious new quarters in Palmerston Road, opposite the Maori Affairs Department, for the St. John Ambulance Association. These will give the association a permanent home of its own and materially assist its worthwhile activities in the town. The association has a subscription fund in existence to assist with its building programme.

Mr and Mrs A. J. Nicol, Stout Street, who qualified recently as one of the rare couples to celebrate the diamond jubilee of their marriage. Mr and Mrs Nicol were married in Napier in 1895, but have spent most of their lives in Gisborne. Mr Nicol was a well-known contractor, and in addition has given a lifetime of service to the community, culminating in the award of the M.B.E. He has been associated with a number of local bodies, including the Gisborne Harbour Board, of which he was a member from 1928 to 1950, serving for 12 years as chairman, and with the Waikanae Beach Improvement Association. Included in the messages of congratulation received at the celebration was one from Her Majesty the Queen.
