Skaters v. Harriers

The first race of what will now be an annual event took place between the Gisborne Harriers and the Gisborne Skating Club on Saturday, June 8th.

Apart from Gladstone Road, the smoothest ½-mile stretch was found to be in Childers Road between Carnarvon St. and Roebuck Road. The harriers started as favourites in the five mile race but it soon became evident that the skaters would win when they quickly gained a half lap lead which was increased to a lap and a half by the finish. Next year some sort of handicap will be worked out. Several of the skaters had to withdraw owing to faults developing in their skates, but all of the harriers completed the course.
