First Section Of Wharerata Highway Completed

The first major step towards providing southbound Gisborne motorists with a satisfactory highway was attained recently when the reconstruction of the Umuhakau section of the Wharerata road was completed by Monk Bros.

In twelve months, the contractors have shifted 220,000 cubic yards of material, to replace the old tortuous route with a modern highspeed highway.

Unfortunately, traffic will have to be carried on a temporary metal surface during the winter, as the paving of the sandstone-cement surface cannot be completed this season.
