A Picture from the Past

This picture from the collection of the late Mrs E. M. Tyerman shows the township of Motu in the early 1900s when the charred tree trunks from burning off were still in prominence.

In those days, Motu was on the main coaching road to the Bay of Plenty, and was an overnight stopover town. In the foreground is the Brooks' house, with Lovell's stables at the left, and the old bridge, which was later washed out and replaced, at the extreme left.
