We don't know what this occasion was, but probably the decorations marked the arrival in Gisborne of a new tramcar, another of the borough's famous battery-driven trams. Relics of this ill-starred effort at community transport remain today in the rails to be seen here and there, and we've often been told that the battery cases made excellent fish-bowls. (From Miss N. Crawford, Wanganui).

Middle-aged and older folk will well remember the excitement, tinged for many with sorrow, of the peace celebrations after World War I had ended. This picture was taken on 13th November, 1918, and shows the procession in Gladstone Road. (From J. Devenport, Salisbury Road).

Whatever happened to the iron railings round the Cook memorial? This early picture of the monument marking Captain Cook's first landing in New Zealand shows an elaborate protecting fence. Preliminary planning is under way for bi-centenary celebrations of the landing in 1969. (Picture from Mrs B. Sutton, 580 Aberdeen Road).
