Mr Frederick James Wilkes, whose death occurred recently at Tauranga, will be remembered with affection by hundreds of past pupils of Gisborne High School and many others in the district. He took his M.A. degree in 1898 and was appointed first assistant and master in charge of English and Latin at Gisborne High School in 1908, holding that position until 1937. He was noted for his genial temperament and ready wit, and his remarkable memory for those whom he taught.
