P B TURF CLUB

A Sponsors Marquee added a new dimension to the Poverty Bay Turf Club's race meetings. Now race sponsors can move between the Members Stand and the marquee tent where entertainment, refreshments, complimentary drinks and betting facilities were available. For the average punter the usual excitement of race day and a few novelty events were still the major drawcard at the Markaraka Racecourse.

Race 8 - the Feature Race - The Trust Bank Rural Finance Gold Cup was presented to owner / trainer Mrs E.G.Craig of Te Puke by Trust Bank Manager Ian Hunter with P.B. Turf Club President Charlie Matthews.

The Novelty Handicap - David McDonald (left) lifted his run to win comfortably, David Johnson, riding Hexton's Pride, galloped past cyclist Ross Brown about 100m out.

David Peake rode Risk to a win.

Rugby Union's Earl Curtain had a difficult task with the Ladies Hat Competition. Honours to Kirsty Taylor (4th from left), daughter of local racing personality Wally Moore.

Brent Emerson went for a record jump of 12 cars. A spectacular variation from the racing timetable.

Sun or shade, wine or punch, socialize or contemplate the race form, all within metres of the track. A new addition to the PB Turf Club's Race Day.

Sponsors revelled in a garden like atmosphere. Some may have backed YoYo Joe for a win in Race 7 (see top of page 6)
