Stimulating Interest
The encouragement and participation, and the stimulation of interest in local sports and cultural activities were the objectives of the coaching visit to Gisborne by the Rothmans Sports and Cultural Foundation from April 8 to 13. Chairman Col. Frank Rennie and Sports Director Peter Snell spearheaded the very successful visit which entailed a programme of hard work for the sports and cultural coaches, numbering 21 in all. Sessions for various schools were held during the day, with evening coaching being conducted for sports clubs and cultural organisations. An evening reception was held at the Sandown Hotel at the start of the visit to enable local club representatives to meet the coaches.
Among those involved were, from left, in front, Raymond Hawthorne (drama), Len Doran (music), Gloria Field (cultural studio, Wellington), Peter Snell (director), Bryan Wilson (athletics), Marlene Williard (formerly Mathews, athletics), Eddie Ng (badminton), and Bill Dyson and Steven McKean (basketball). Back row: Martin Horton and Bert Sutcliffe (cricket), Marian Smith (netball), Pat Walsh (rugby), Barry Truman (soccer), Leith Shand (tennis), Don and Mrs Brewer (softball) and John Flett (bowls).
To mark the week-long visit, Rothmans presented a handsome volume, "Adventure In Art," as a gift to the city. Col. Rennie (left) presents the book which will go to the library, to Cr. Seton Clare.
