Keep Alive

Hunting is another field where carelessness with guns causes too many accidents and near misses. The following five basic rules of shooting safety, IF Obeyed, would eliminate most of the tragedies in the world of hunting. The first requirement, before the rules, is simply that you must know how to operate your firearm properly and safely.

  • 1. Check That Firearm. A checked rifle has the magazine removed and the bolt open. Loaded firearms are not permitted inside huts or camps.
  • 2. Load Magazine Only When Hunting Ground Is Reached.
  • 3. Use A Half-Open Bolt When In A State Of Semi-Readiness.
  • 4. Identify Your Target. Your target must be identified beyond all possible doubt.
  • 5. Consider Your Firing Zone. The firing zone both to and beyond the target must be clear and safe; no flat hard surfaces or rocks to cause ricochets.

Two important additions to the above are these: (a) Take care when climbing over fences, which actually comes under rule 2; (b) Keep your gun clean at all times. These split barrels (Below) were all caused by the owners not keeping the guns clean!
