Mr Moni Taumanu, 17 Townley Street, is mainly responsible for this beautifully carved Maori war canoe. It is believed there is only this one and another like it in the whole of New Zealand. The other is in the Wellington Museum, and was also carved in Gisborne, by the late Mr Kani Te Ua. Three hundred and twenty hours of work went into the canoe which is fully equipped. There are 28 parts to the canoe and, of course, every part is named. It is carved from totara, the king tree for carving

Three croquet players from the Barry Club (from left) Rua Clarke, Cliff Anderson and Richard Clarke have done pretty well for themselves so far this season. Rua Clarke won the Arthur Ross Cup at the Hawkes Bay Tourney, beating Arthur Ross himself a New Zealand champ. Cliff Anderson won the Manawatu Cup, going right through without a loss. Also he and his son Alan beat top New Zealand seeds John Prince and Keith Woollett in the N.Z. championship doubles at Wanganui. Richard Clarke was the only one of 24 players to triple peel at the Gold and Silver Mallet Tournament in Hamilton. And in the North Island championships at Wellington he was beaten only by two top seeds, John Prince and Mrs B. Jarden. However, he went on to beat Mrs Jarden in the open tournament.

Part of the new stables at the Makaraka racecourse pictured under construction. They were built to augment accommodation for horses attending local meetings which seemed to have gained in popularity over the last few seasons.

Are the stalls which house the horses before each race.
