Pneumatic Hammer

A new method of nailing made its appearance in Gisborne recently in the form of a spot-nailing machine. The machine, imported by Holts and the only one of its kind in the city, is of American design and manufacture, and is available on a hire service to builders.

The machine uses compressed air to drive the nails through the wood, and does so with one complete blast. It eliminates punching, and ensures that there are no obstructions for sanding by driving the nails an extra 1/16" to 1/8" into the surface. The machine performs best when the air pressure is at 100 lbs to the square inch, and, as it has very few moving parts, requires very little maintenance.

Carl Stuart uses the machine on the flooring of a house being built by Gus Herkt. The strength of the machine can be gauged by the fact that the flooring is seasoned heart matai and the joists heart rimu, two of New Zealand's hardest woods.

The nails come in packs and are loaded into the nailer in the same manner as staples into a stapling gun.
