Trouble on Oiled Waters

×

Illustrative of the kind of treatment the harbour sea wall has to put up with when a southerly buster comes up the bay is this shot of waves breaking over the wall recently. Work is now proceeding with the re-piling of Butler's Wall on the west side of the harbour, and if "Photo News" can cadge a ride over, it will present pictures of this work shortly.

One way to calm the waves is to pour oil on them. Recently a leak in the oil line at the wharves resulted in some petroleum products getting into the harbour instead of the tanks. Sequel was this shot of the Fire Brigade pumping a mixture of "inflammable material" and sea water out of the harbour, where it constituted a danger to shipping. After a cunning separation process the water went back into the harbour--not that it was short of water, but on account of the heavy rain about that time, Gisborne certainly didn't want it.
