Bride On The Bridge

×

The path of true lore never runs smooth, says the old proverb. This was literally the case for Kathleen Goldsmith, of Manutuke, on the Saturday the Te Arai bridge collapsed. For she was on one side of the river, and her groom, Sonny Hika, was on the other. The wedding was scheduled for 5 p.m. on the Gisborne side of the river, and almost in the nick of time, the Bailey bridge span was completed sufficiently for the bride and her retinue to walk across, assisted over the planks and girders by workmen in the job. Kathleen formerly worked in the store at Manutuke, but before that came from Whatatutu.
