Gaining 93%, Fred Maynard of Manutuke topped New Zealand in his first qualifying exam in electricity.

Under the Maori Affairs apprentice training scheme Fred spent his first year at the Auckland Technical Institute.

Though now indentured to the Poverty Bay Electric-Power Board, Fred will spend this, his second year, with the private firm of Ellis and Bull, and then his final three years with the board.

Fred, who is 17 and a past pupil of Gisborne Boys' High School, is the son of Mrs J. Robin, Manutuke, and the late Mr Hugh Maynard.
