Sportsman Of The Month

Doug Herbison, son of Mrs C. Herbison, 1 Turenne Street, and the late Mr Herbison, is prominent in the world of chopping.

An outstanding exeman, Doug, who is a professional bush contractor, has innumerable trophies and ribbons to his credit, and to date has won well over £300 in prizemonies with nine firsts and many seconds and thirds.

Pride of place in his collection at the moment is the Cyril Griggs Shield which goes to the competitor scoring the most points at the largest and nearest meeting to Nelson each year, and which Doug won in April of last year.

At the last Waipukurau Show, Doug created a new New Zealand record of 13 secs for the 11in underhand lombardy poplar chop.

The previous record was 14.9secs and the Waipukurau A & P Association is endeavouring to have the time established as a world record.

Doug cares for all his own axes and to get one axe into top chopping condition can take up to 25 hours.

Exactly sharpened, the axe has a razor's edge.
