Stuart's Great Race

We've seen Neil Stuart racing at Tahunanui in a variety of cars on many occasions, but never have we seen him race so skilfully as he did in the Nelson provincial motor racing title at the New Year meeting. The race was won by Christchurch driver N. G. Smith, driving a former-year Stuart Ford Special, but most eyes were on Stuart racing in Peter Leversedge's car - another car built and raced by Stuart 10 years ago. Stuart could not hold the more powerful Ford Special on the straights, but superlative driving on the tight bends enabled him to narrow the gap each lap. We caught Stuart (above) as he threw his car into a slide on the western bend. His own car, the powerful Corvette, was unable to race because of clutch trouble.

Some people have a lot of luck, others a lot of misfortune. One such Is Wally Darrell. He's had a lot of bad luck in recent years, but none worse than this year. He commenced the racing with gearbox trouble and had just repaired it when he lost a wheel on the western bend (above). Then on the second day, he lost another wheel. That's cheerful Wally (above) and a despondent Wally seated in his wheel-less car as his wheel goes for a solitary jaunt.

Top motor-cyclist was undoubtedly R. Uudstrom, of Blenheim. He won practically every race for which he was entered.

Also in trouble were Colin Fraser and his Peugeot, receiving assistance here from\Ed Perry and Lyndsay Bezett.
