101 Years Atwaimea West

×

Waimea West today is a little country area in Nelson province, indistinguishable from many thousands of little settlements like it throughout New Zealand. But 101 years ago when settlers in the district built this beautiful little church, Waimea West was the centre of a thriving little community. Last month, past and present members of the St. Michael's parish gathered for a special service to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the parish. It was at Waimea West that the first Anglican church in the Nelson settlement was built in 1843. The present church in this peaceful rural setting, was consecrated 24 years later.
