International Golf at Nelson
The Japanese Eisenhower Cup golf team, making a short tour of New Zealand after the tournament in Australia, had to fight hard to beat a Nelson-Marlborough team at the Nelson links. Playing in a very cold and stiff southerly wind, the Japanese scored a 303 against the local side's 306. Hero of the home side was the young Rai Valley player, Kelvin Gardiner. His chipping was immaculate and a feature of the day's play. He finished with a 73, the same as the No 1 Japanese player, Nacabe.
Gardiner off the tee.
The Japanese team of G. Nacabe (73), S. Marikawa (74), S. Maeda (81), and K. Yamada (75).
The Nelson-Marlborough team: Murray Gyde (77), Brian Cleland (80), Kelvin Gardiner and Graeme Lummis (76).
