A Round With Keith Foxton

No.3: 380 yards

We continue a round of the Nelson Golf Club's course at Tahunanul, with club professional, Keith Foxton. Each month Keith will play a hole on the course and will place himself in the awkward circumstances that all golfers sometimes find themselves in. In this way Keith will be able to explain, per medium of the photographs, how to play a shot or extricate himself from trouble.

The No 3 hole veers slightly to the left and there's trouble on the right for the sliced tee shot. To avoid this the longer handicap golfer, in particular, should tee up to the right (at top) and aim slightly to the left towards the ground under repair. We will assume the tee shot has finished on the downhill slope on the left of the g.u.r. To play the second shot, stand a little closer to the ball than usual and with a more upright stance (far left). Making sure to get a full shoulder turn, use a very upright swing – swinging high in the back swing and finishing the follow-through high. The more upright stance, when the feet are higher than the ball, helps to eliminate any tendency to slice from a downhill lie. The picture at left shows the more upright swing on the back-swing.
