Pottering Round The Port

×

The Timaru bucket dredge, the W. H. Orbell, has left Nelson after completing deepening the entrance outside and inside the harbour. The rather ungainly-looking vessel, although badly affected by adverse weather, still completed more work than was originally estimated, dredging something like 120,000 tons of spoil.

As time and tide have allowed, Harbour Board employees have been working on the new small-boat ramp. The massive ramp and structure for it at left will later be removed. Its erection was necessary to allow the men to work during tidal changes. At right, the first section of steel sheeting for the big coffer dam is being lowered into place. After the main concrete block has been laid inside this, the sheeting and the piling will be removed and the remainder of the concrete ramp above the water mark laid. Date of completion has not been finalised.
