Nelson's Changing Face

In recent months, probably because of the country's economic position, there has been little building of a major scale in Nelson. The last big project to alter the skyline was the new Valet building in Trafalgar Street. There has been some building, however, much of it on the reclamation.

The new stores section of the City Council's block on the reclamation has been completed and new workshops are being erected for the Council. When completed they will allow the Council to move out of the inadequate yards in Paru Paru Road (above). These yards and sheds have been used by the Council since about 1938.

Also going up in quick time is this engineering workshop for Stringer Engineering, on the reclamation. The firm carrying out the job, C. Gibbons Ltd, is using prefabricated concrete slabs for the building's walls (one of this is being slung into place at left).
