Oldtimers of the Sea

These two scows, owned by the Karamea Shipping Company, and based at Nelson, are the last such ships trading in the South Island and the bottom of the North Island. Both are used on the Nelson-Mapua-Motueka-Wellington and sometimes Wanganui runs. The one above, on the slips, is the Portland, built in 1910, and that below, the Te Aroha (built 1909). The Portland was acquired by the company in 1963 and the Te Aroha in 1936, The Te Aroha has had the same master, Captain Ken Wells, since 1949.
