50-mile Cycle Title

Riding off the 10½ min mark, Nelson junior Brian Gibbs held off all challenges to win the Nelson 50-mile championship earlier this month. The ride of the day, however, was that of Ray Harris, of 'Nelson. From scratch Ray returned the fastest time of 1hr 54 min 17sec - 3 mins and 16sec better than the record time put up by P. Neilson (Marlborough) in 1965. Congrats, Ray.

At left are the first three riders home, Brian Gibbs (Nel), at top, 1st; Russell Sakey (Upper Hutt), centre. 2nd, and Gil Painter (Marl), 3rd. Below, is new record holder, Ray Harris, and below right, the finish, as Brian Gibbs just holds off Russell Sakey. Above, at the Pea Viner corner, the 10½ and 13½ min bunch: Ray Bryant, Owen Williscroft, Brian Gibbs (all Nelson), Russell Sakey (Hutt), Mike Graham (Marl), Gilbert Painter and G. Liddicoat (both Marl).
