Hangi at Richmond

×

Children of Richmond Primary School had a hot dinner, Maori style, recently. Teachers Leon Hunia and Tom Ihaka built a Maori oven in which were cooked meat and veges. Did the Riddles like it? The answer is at left, where Danny Boyd is making short work of his dinner.

Mr Hunia uncovers the pit and brings forth the meat, which Neil Larsen (below) is quick to devour.

End of an Era

The sale to Grocers' United Stores of the grocery business of K. M. Black Ltd. brings to an end an important era in Nelson's history. For exactly 40 years, Mr Kenneth McKenzie Black has carried on the grocery business founded by Malcolm Muir Webster in April, 1865, and it is one of the few retail grocery businesses to have retained a liquor licence. "Quality is our leading feature" is a motto not taken lightly in the Black grocery. From the earliest years, the business has imported direct and therefore has had access to all the markets of the world. From Mr Black we learned something of the history of the business. Webster, a migrant from Edinburgh, was at first employed by Pioneer Storekeepers (better known as Wilkie and Co), in Lower Bridge Street, but in 1865 he began his own store in Trafalgar Street on what is now the site of Valet Dry Cleaners. Later the business passed into the hands of Webster's son, M. P. Webster, and the store moved across the street to where Trathen's is now. The Black family came to Nelson in 1910 and Ken Black joined Websters and remained at this store until 1929 when a fire forced Mr Webster to seek new premises. These were established in Bridge Street, at the present site, and in August, 1928, Ken Black took over the business. The liquor licence has also been sold - to Dalgety and N. Z. Loan Ltd. The transfer to the new owners will take effect in October.
