The recently-formed Richmond and District Highland Pipe Band was out in force to lead competitors in the Atlantic Silver Plough contest on to the grounds at Appleby earlier this month. Members of the band there were Pipe Major Noel Frater, Phillip Best, Beverley Holland, Ian Gill, Ron Growcott, Royce McGlashen and Drum Sergeant, Ian McWhinnie (centre).

The new home of the Forest Service quarantine staff on the reclamation. The staff, which is responsible for the inspection of all timber and logs arriving and leaving the port, was based formerly at the headquarters in the city.

Some of the girl pupils of Nayland College look a little askance at a mummified Egyptian head about 2000 years old, displayed by Mr George Ashley and Mr Clifford Wilson. Both men visited the college during a tour of New Zealand. Mr Wilson is the director of the Australian Institute of Archaeology. The head was one of many old artifacts from the Middle East belonging to the institute.
