Children Make Sounds Orchestral

A 120-piece orchestra produced a wonderful sound last month. Now, what's so strange about that, you may ask. Well, the sound came from the instruments of children from Stds 1 to 4, and from Forms 1 to 111, who were drawn from schools from as far away as Reefton and Tapawera. And the sound they produced was, if not entirely philharmonic, a tremendous achievement in view of the orchestra's size and age, and indicative of what is to be achieved in the future. Tutors drawn from many schools helped with the sectional tuition, but Mr'D. Jack, the Department of Education Music Adviser, was its main conductor. The orchestra, while it was together for the. week-long course, practised five short compositions and it is hoped these will be performed at the primary schools' music festival this month.
