Restoration of Antiques

The collecting of antiques, whether for profit or for fun, is carried on by many in New Zealand, but Stuart Jonson, of 15 Suter Street, Stoke, finds more fun in restoring antiques and turning rare woods into something useful. But he stipulates that the woods on which he is working must be rare woods.

At left is a collection of writing desks, trinket boxes and a decanter set which he restored for friends recently. Some of these arrived with broken bottoms and tied up with string. He hand-makes the escutcheons, hinges, and other metal parts and sends them back like new.
