It'S A Dog'S Life

There are dogs, and dogs, and likevise, the old saying "it's a dog's life" can have two meanings. If you're a blue blood (dog, that is), then the dog's Life is milk and honey. Probably the worst feature of it is all the primping and brushing and polishing that goes into the preparations for the parades attended by all the other blue bloods. These are the times when the dogs have to work for their softer life, because High placings and champion awards mean higher prices for progeny. Blue bloods from all parts of New Zealand were on parade recently at the Nelson District Kennel Association's show and it was there we took these pix.

It's not often you get the dam, sire and five of a litter of seven competing at the one show, but that was the case here with these spaniels. From left, Susan Heydon (Hope), Cheryl Barrett (Redwood' Valley), Mrs Ivan O'Leary (with the dam). Mrs Margaret Robinson (with the sire), Ivan O'Leary, Rodney O'Leary and Mrs Anne Treymane.

Outstanding dog at the show was the Afghan hound shown here by owner-breeder, Bill Van Selles, of Wellington. Anne Fleming, of Westport, is showing an Afghan pup, also belonging to Mr Van Selles. The Afghans have a very soft, silken hair, the brushings from which have often been used in the knitting of jerseys and the like.
