Bishopdale Hill Lowered

The crest of Bishopdale Hill, a bottleneck on the main outlet from Nelson, was lowered by six feet by heavy earthmoving machinery recently. The job took two days, during which traffic on the route was disrupted, but the benefit to travellers will be enormous for four-lane clearance will replace the very narrow roadway at the brow. The poplar trees on the western side of the road will remain when the road is realigned. A footpath will be formed behind them.

Huge carry-alls scraped the foundations in huge bites, doing in two days what would have taken weeks with pick, shovel and barrow.
