Customs Haul

If you're a smuggler, you have to be ingenious. The problem is to find a hiding place for contraband which is so cleverly concealed that even the most experienced customs inspector can't find it. The smuggler who tried to get these transistor radios into New Zealand duty-free certainly went to a great deal of trouble.

He cut out the bottoms of these old oil drums and fitted false rubber or linoleum replacements to make a hidden space into which were crammed transistor radios, shavers, and other electrical appliances. Picture shows the Auckland chief boarding inspector, Mr Wyatt, with some of the drums and radios.
