Sand Yachting On Rabbit Island

×

What is believed to be the first sand yachting club in New Zealand was formed in Nelson earlier this Month. Three enthusiasts, Jim Crapper, Bill Morris and Trevor Phillips, conceived the idea two years ago and wrote away to England for plans. Jim built his yacht first and Bill had his first spin in his craft a few weeks ago. Incidentally, these are not toys, but yachts which can attain high speed, so that they are not flimsy craft. This fine pic, of Bill Morris's "Whisper", and those on the next page, were taken by Peter Cooper during a visit to Rabbit Island, where the club has a wonderful low-tide track.

The sand yachting sport la well established in Europe and was not unknown in Nelson as far back as 1921. This pic chows a sand yacht da Tahuna Beach, but rumour has it that the flimsy const ruction caused many breakdowns.
