The chips were down and flying

Axemen from many parts of New Zealand, with strong contingents from the West Coast and Tokoroa, gave of their utmost at the meeting of the Nelson-Marlborough centre of the New Zealand Athletics, Cycling and Axemen's Union at Richmond Park. Not only were the cash prizes large, but added inducement was a chance to be selected for the national team to tour Australia. The events were final trials before selection.
