New Year's Eve-Drunkenness and Vandalism

In Nelson it's traditional to gather beneath the Post Office clock to see the New Year in. There was a time, a few years ago, when the Pipe Band's presence added to the festivities. Then some fools threw empty beer bottles at the band members, and they, rightly, have not returned. This, however, was an isolated incident, three or four years ago. This New Year's eve there was nothing isolated about the deliberate and wanton smashing of bottles and flagons during the so-called festivities. High spirits is one thing, but we were appalled and disgusted at the high incidence of drunkenness. Not among the adults, but teenagers, both male and female. And some were very new teenagers. Not all who participated in the revelry, of course, were in this state, or even drinking. Many young people were as disgusted as we were. And little wonder.
