Gallops At Richmond

Starters in the Caltex Handicap, the major event on the second day, leap from the stalls

Although the Nelson Racing Club had fine weather for both days of its winter meeting, heavy rain preceded each race day with the result that racing conditions were shockingly heavy. Big fields were entered for most races, but the heavy going prompted many owners to scratch with the result that some races were contested by as few as four horses. The major event on the programme, the Nelson Cup, was won for the third time by Grand Coeur. The cup itself, a new gold one, is pictured above.
