Instrument Maker Extraordinary

There is seldom an occasion when a disaster does not benefit somebody. The Hungarian uprising in 1956 was disastrous, but through it New Zealand benefited, for the uprising sent Laszlo Szabo, a surgical instrument designer and maker, to Nelson. At his home, Mr Szabo designs, makes and repairs many surgical instruments used in many hospitals throughout the Dominion, This work calls for tremendous patience and skill above the ordinary. We visited Mr Szabo and his wife, Susannah, in their home recently to get these pics.

A few of the many instruments made or designed by Mr Szabo are displayed here (he is holding a thermostatic laboratory blood bath in stainless steel).
