Serpentine By Barge

A new type of sea cargo service was introduced to Nelson last month with the inaugural visit of the 80ft ocean-going tug Mohala and its 175ft tow, a huge barge capable of carrying 1500 tons of cargo. During the second visit to Nelson of these vessels, we watched and recorded loading operations. Loading of serpentine for the North Island commenced about 9.30 a.m., and the actual loading was completed by 4.45 p.m. In that time 1200 tons of serpentine was transferred from wharf to barge. Shortly after 6.30 p.m. the vessels were on their way north.

The big synthetic tarpaulins (the set cost £700) are moved aboard shortly after the cargo is flattened and correctly stowed.

A mobile conveyor belt with hopper is kept full by two front-end loaders.

A bulldozer flattens the load and ensures that its weight is evenly distributed.

The two vessels pass the main wharves at the port on their outward journey. During the tow about 1200ft of water lies between tug and barge.
