One-Wicket Victory

Even making allowances for a little softness in the pitch and the steadiness of the bowling, there was some poor batting by both Nelson and Christ's College batsmen when the two schools met at Nelson. Only 169 runs came off the bat in the combined first innings and in the second innings only eight of the 22 batsmen reached double figures. The match, however, provided an exciting finish. Christ's College, on a drying pitch, needed 135 for victory and it still required 28 runs with only one wicket standing. The two tail-enders, M. Lester and B. Andrews, managed to secure them to give Christ's College a one-wick-et victory. (Pictures by Geoffrey C. Wood).
