The Hop Harvest

A farm of 500 acres is not considered a big unit by any means, yet it is from just a little more than 500 acres that New Zealand's hop requirements are obtained. Practically all of this acreage lies in the Waimea county and it produces annually the tremendous yield of more than a million pounds of dried product. Hops, as everyone knows, are a very necessary ingredient in a beverage which is very dear to most New Zealanders' hearts - beer. So that the-barrels can keep rolling pickers come to the Nelson district every year to help harvest the crop. Shortages of pickers have caused quite a lot of concern this year and in some areas the situation is reaching the desperate stage.

The pictures on these three pages were taken on the property of Mr E. G. Inglis, Riwaka.
