New Archbishop Installed at Nelson
There was much to occupy the attention of clergy and laity at the 35th General Synod of the Church of England held in Nelson, but by tar the most important was the election of a new Primate and Archbishop to succeed Archbishop R. H. Owen, who died the day before the synod met. The Rt. Rev.N. A. Lesser, Bishop of Waiapu, was elected. He had been senior bishop following the resignations of Archbishop Owen and Bishop J. Simkin last year. This was not the first time a Primate and Archbishop had been elected at Nelson, but the installation of Archbishop Lesser at Nelson Cathedral was unique in the history of the church in the diocese.
