Minister Opens New Cool Store

Twenty-eight Members of Parliament and 19 journalists representing newspapers from all over the Dominion, were among the hundreds who attended the official opening of the Apple and Pear Board's new cool store on the reclamation towards the end of February. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Gillespie) performed the opening ceremony. In the two days in which the board's guests were in the province, every facet of fruit production was shown and explained to them. They saw orchards and packing sheds and were given a detailed account of the board's requirements and standards, and saw these applied in the examining shed. The 160,000 case store - it can hold 200,000 cases if absolutely necessary - is now functioning. The board's building programme is not yet completed, however. An immediate start is being made on a new fruit juice factory at Stoke which will cost about £170,000.
