Nelson Wins Basketball

The North Queensland men's basketball team found Nelson too tough a nut to crack when the touring team played in Nelson. Maintaining tremendous pressure on the visitors throughout the game, Nelson took an early lead and retained it throughout the second half to win 70-58.

Public Speaking Contest

The Nelson zone eliminations for the New Zealand secondary schools' annual public speaking contest was won by Barbara Henderson, a pupil of Nelson College for Girls. Nine pupils from secondary schools in the Nelson and Marlborough districts competed. The subject of the speeches was Sir Winston Churchill. All nine speakers are pictured on this page.
